This intensive field drainage project addressed chronic waterlogging issues across 32 hectares of heavy Cambridgeshire clay. Our drainage specialists undertook a comprehensive survey and design process before installing 1.2km of perforated pipe drain at 600mm depth, feeding into a new main outfall to the existing ditch network. Mole drainage was then carried out at 500mm depth on a 2m spacing, dramatically increasing the infiltration capacity of the clay sub-soil. The result is a field that previously lost 3-4 weeks of cropping opportunity per season now drains effectively within 24 hours of significant rainfall. All work was carried out to DEFRA stewardship standards, with minimal surface disturbance to surrounding headlands.
